"Joking aside, one weakness of Engelstad's text is that it treats
sociology as a pure thought discipline, a conceptual work without
social origin, support, suppliers and consumers. Already about 30
years ago, when Robert Priddy and Arvid Hansen did their large research
foundation-supported study of Norwegian social science, their conclusion
was clear: "There are things which social research very much
resemble, and that is bureaucracy" (see Sosiologiske årbok
2000-1). That similarity has hardly grown less since then. The 'free
research institutes' have grown, developed and flowered, but under
a far stricter in-built control than before. Free finances hardly
exist, practically all social research is financed through programs...
